The Tonle Sap Lake is located in central Cambodia. It takes about one hour to travel the 20 miles across the lake to reach the school.
The Tonle Sap Lake is located in central Cambodia and empties into the Mekong river part of the year and during the rainy season flows backwards into the lake. At its height it grows to a size of approximately 6000 square miles. Approximately 1.2 million people living in the greater Tonle Sap make their living by fishing on the local waters. The villages that surround the Tonle Sap Lake are home to some of the poorest people in Cambodia. They are less educated, have fewer livelihood options, do not own agricultural land and largely depend on common property resources such as water bodies and flooded forests for their livelihood. Our desire is to work with and invest in families in the Kbal Taol village on the Lake. We will base out of Siem Reap, a provincial capital in northwestern Cambodia, about a 45 minute drive from the lake. Siem Reap is the gateway to the ruins of Angkor. Angkor a vast complex of ancient stone ruins and includes preserved Angkor Wat, the main temple, which is pictured on Cambodia’s flag.
